Broader smart TV operating systems, which may be available across many different TV brandsįor any particular platform, the playback capabilities may be affected by several factors, including the extent to which we can directly test on the platform ourselves, the (Plex) user base on the platform, and more. Some of the platforms will have limited playback capabilities because of these factors. Other platforms receive more customized capabilities. On the following systems, the Plex app has been customized to be able to take advantage of the expanded playback capabilities of each device. Exact capabilities can vary, but Plex running on these systems is not restricted to the “Limited” playback capabilities outlined in the dedicated section later in the article. Our current app is available on 4K/UHD LG television models running webOS 3.0 or newer system software. Plex had hoped to release it in time for the Apple TV launch, but Apple rejected the first version due to some issue.Note: Due to root certificate limitations with the device OS itself, only webOS 5.0+ devices support secure connections with a personal Plex Media Server. The Plex app for the new Apple TV on the other hand has been delayed. The Plex app was already free on Roku, Tivo, Chromecast, and Xbox 360.
The media player app is also free on devices running Android TV such as Sony and Philips’ 2015 TVs as well as media player boxes such as Nvidia Shield and Nexus Player. Compatible devices include LG’s 2013 Netcast TVs and 2014+2015 webOS TVs, Sony’s 20 Smart TVs, Toshiba’s Smart TVs and 2013+ Vizio TVs. The Plex app is now also free to download and use on Smart TVs. The company has released a free app for Roku & Xbox 360, updates for PS3 and PS4 and an entirely new player for the PC with 4K support. Plex free on more devicesPlex has been very active in the past few months. That time has come for owners of select Smart TVs, including those running Android TV. Plex usually offers new apps and features only for paying Plex Pass subscribers and then, after some time, apps get released to everyone for free.
